| Introduction | Having spent the first third of my life as professional musician, I came to athletic pursuits comparatively late, not doing my first 10k race until age 33. In the twenty-five years since then I have completed scores of marathons, triathlons and other endurance events, including six Ironman finishes. I have always regarded the opportunity to participate in these events as a blessing, and a success whatever the outcome. But it is precisely the uncertainty of the outcome that makes it an irresistible adventure. As Sir Edmund Hillary remarked, if you start out on a challenge with absolute knowledge that you are going to succeed, why bother starting? |
