Industry Arts
Occupation Dance Educator
Location Los Angeles, United States
Introduction A former professional ballet dancer, originally from South Africa, I landed teaching in Canada (22 yrs) and running a Vocational Training/Academic School (16 yrs). Graduates were accepted into numerous companies and programs within Canada, the US and Europe. Students were awarded provincial titles and were often finalists in internationally acclaimed competitions. My school was often recognized for its holistic training program, and I was invited to present research/workshops in dance science and ballet training at many international conferences and events, including the International Association of Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS), Healthy Dancer Canada and Ballet Beyond Borders. I’ve published in the JDMS, am currently on the IADMS’s Dance Educator Committee and written for their Bulletin. Newly relocated to LA, and the new ISTD International Representative for North America, my husband (addictions/ADHD specialist) and sister (psychologist) have inspired me to look beyond the physical in training dancers. What mental health impacts and considerations are there? LA is a gift of space to ponder this aspect while taking my M.A. Professional Practice through Middlesex University.
