| Introduction | In the 1990's and early 2000's I spent some time in Japan as a "trailing spouse" accompanying my wife as she conducted anthropological research. As a bumbling stranger not speaking the language I was adopted by neighborhood people who quickly became fast friends. I began to have "adventures" playing music in bars, massacring golf courses, playing volleyball, very poor tennis, running local races, delighting in Japanese culture and cuisine and simply having the time of my life. So I wrote about it sending dispatches to America from time to time. Some of these appear herein.... When I returned home I lost the urge to write about my daily life because, after all, Ithaca is not a foreign country and who cares about just another aging baby boomer trying to hold off despair in the twilight years. And then one day on the way to rehearse songs from the '60's written by teenagers for teenagers I had second thoughts. And here they are.... |
