Introduction	The Industrial Revolution brought many girls from the farms of New England to cities such as Lowell, Dover, and Lawrence. Many of these girls had an insatiable thirst for knowledge, hiding books in their work aprons and using what little free time they had to attend self-made Improvement Circles. Me? I'm just like the original mill girls. Except that I work comfortably at a desk and don't wear a petticoat. I also swear. A lot.
