| Introduction | I had always wanted to go to Africa, but circumstances didn’t allow me to go to Africa for a couple of years with VSO. My daughter suggested I went to Sanyu Babies Home in Kampala “to look after the babies, mum!” so that’s what I did for a couple of weeks in April 07.It was probably the best introduction to Uganda I could have had! While there, I visited a school and some of the children’s homes in a slum area of Kampala called Namuwongo. Most of the huts were really small with no furniture or many possessions, but the stories of courage got to me and strangely I fell in love with the place and knew I would return. This I did in March 08 for three weeks. Two things struck me:there were no reading books and the children couldn't read back to me what they had copied from the board. One night, as I was lying under my mossie net, it was like a ‘perfect plan’ moment!I wanted to go back to Namuwongo;I had lots of reading books in my house and I was considering phased retirement! So in September I set off to Uganda for 8 weeks with an extra bag full of reading books! |
