Introduction | My research is in machine learning, Polar science and robotics, developing an autonomous Polar rover, Yeti, who performs autonomous surveys of ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland. Crevasses pose serious and costly threats to scientists and their vehicles, especially because they are often invisible from the surface due to "snow-bridges" that cover them. Tracked ground-vehicle traverses are increasingly showing promise for the NSF as opposed to US Air Force cargo planes, which burn dirty jet fuel, and actually consume more fuel than they deliver. Our main goal with Yeti is to free up resources and money away from logistics (mostly from air-time) so that we can direct it toward doing more science in the Poles, and doing it cleanly with the lowest possible emissions. You can follow Yeti on his adventures at this blog and at www.facebook.com/yetirobot |
