Introduction In Dutch there are quite a few good terms that describe my past academic career ('gesjeesde-' or 'eeuwige student' would do just fine.) To describe them, I spent quite some time in University; did complete a Dutch equivalent of the Master's Degree at the University of Twente, and did NOT complete Penn State's Instructional Systems PhD programme. At some point I decided I should grow up and see how it is to apply the learnt skills in the real world. And I was fortunate to roll into the world of non-profit/charity type organisations. First saving the planet in WWF International, and currently responding to emergencies and working towards a just world for all in Oxfam GB. OK, in both cases in a learning and development role, supporting the staff to play their parts a little better, I hope. I have kept in touch with the academic me, realising there are good ideas coming out of there from time to time. And I am sure the researchers are happy to know their ideas make a difference in real life!
