IntroductionI might very well be up on a (sacred) mountain, so let me catch my breath. Please check my Beloit College website, which includes an overview, some research projects, and just about all of the courses I have taught in the last decade. http://www.beloit.edu/history/faculty/rob/
InterestsEthnography, cycling, wine, sashimi, baseball, opera, country music, historiography, and other stuff.
Favorite moviesSeven Samurai, Casablanca, Fargo, (this covers it completely). Lest anyone wonder why Citizen Kane is not listed, I never could understand why it is always listed #1 on "Best Movies" lists. I won't explain why (it's a story that can only be told over a beer...to friends, trust me) I have the credentials to say "Top Twenty, but NOT number one."
Favorite musicBeethoven Piano Concerto #3 in C minor (Opus 37), There's a Tear in my Beer (Hank Williams), Dropkick me Jesus Through the Goalposts of Life (Bobby Bare), Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor (Opus 64)
Favorite booksTristes Tropiques, 雪国 (Snow Country),Emile, Democracy in America, The Closing of the American Mind, Humboldt's Gift, Le Tour de la France par Deux Enfants, 資治通鑑, The Tempest, Ilongot Headhunting, The Golden Bough, Mrs. Bridge, Mr. Bridge, La pensée sauvage

What reason do you have to believe the earth is flat?

I'm from North Dakota, and I didn't see a hill until I was five years old (and not too many trees, either).
