Occupation field biologist, writer, translator
Location Corvallis, Oregon, United States
Introduction An avid naturalist since I learned to crawl and a passionate birder since the age of 13, I am currently forced to divide my time between my chosen home, Oregon, and my birth country, Germany. When I'm not busy crossing the Atlantic, I work as a writer, translator and field biologist, wherever the jobs are. My latest stint was as a Snowy Plover monitor on the Central Oregon Coast.
Interests birds and birding, Felidae, other mammals, herps, mushrooms, butterflies, dragonflies, all nature, our 3 cats, hiking, camping, trout fishing, travel, music, reading, art, wine, cooking, taxonomy, digital photography
Favorite Movies I like all kinds of movies, as long as they have a decent plot, acceptable acting and enjoyable photography (please spare me a "film noir" that is shot entirely in the dark). Among the most memorable ones that I can watch again and again are the wonderful movies by Claude Berri, "Jean de Florette" and "Manon des Sources" (they make me so homesick for Southern France!) and Billy Bob Thornton's "Sling Blade". I also greatly enjoyed "The Client", based on John Grisham's novel.
Favorite Music Classical, Folk (Joan Baez, Nanci Griffith, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan, Woody and Arlo Guthrie...), French Chancons (Jaques Brel, Edith Piaf, Barbara...), Irish Folk (Dubliners etc.), Classic Rock from the 60s and 70s, The Traveling Wilburies, The Grateful Dead and Bob Weir's Ratdog, Old Jazz, Raggae, some Country (Hank Williams, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Bobby Bare, Porter Wagoner), Oscar Harper and Haunted Man, the late, great Kevin Frye, and many more ...
Favorite Books Patrick O'Brian's "Captain Aubrey and Dr. Maturin" series, Marcel Pagnol ("L'Eau des Collines", "La Gloire de Mon Père", "Le Château de ma Mère"), Bruce Chatwin ("The Songlines", "On the Black Hill"), Robert B. Parker, Kathy Reichs, Dorothy Sayers, Donna Leon, Jack Kerouac, Gary Snyder, Ken Kesey, to name but a few. (And yes, I've read and greatly enjoyed the Harry Potter series, too).
