Gender Female

Introduction I wrote my first book, From One to Ninety-one: A Life, last year at age 90. My life began in 1919 on a farm in rural Ohio and has intersected with the century’s major events. I lost my first husband in WWII. He was a white art student from Florida who flew a B-26 bomber in the Army Air Corps. My second husband, Ernest Thompson, was the first black organizer for the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE) and director of organization for the National Negro Labor Council. I was for 42 years secretary to Morton Stavis, whose first job was helping to prove the constitutionality of the Social Security Act and who went on to become a founder of the Center for Constitutional Rights.
