| Interests | The study and understanding of the evolution social behaviour of animals, especially cetaceans (Whales and Dolphins) and other marine mammals and human beings, and the application of this knowledge in the conservation of wild species together with sustainable development. I have a specific interest in cases that involve conflicts between marine mammals and human activities, given the environmental and economic consequences that are associated. My major focus is the social behaviour including cooperative and communication behaviour and social intelligence in cetaceans and other marine mammals. My PhD work regards the social behaviour and social intelligence of dolphins and whales, and this has led me to become a member of the research team in Social Relations at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. I’ve obtained my MS.c with a study about the social organization of humpback whales and their affiliation patterns in the Straight of Magellan, of the Chilean Patagonia. In the same area I will begin a long-term study on killer whales’ social behaviour and their interaction with human activities, in order to establish the first long term conservation program for Orcas and their habitat through research and education in Chile. The project involves identification, social organization, and life history of killer whales in Chile. My role in this project will focus on their social cooperative behaviour, the way they interact with human activities, and the structure and function of underwater acoustics in social communication. This research is addressed to various aspects of the orcas’ behaviour, ecology, management and conservation, and also includes an educational program working with local communities and authorities for marine ecosystem conservation. |
