Introduction“Zoom and Boom on Poland in thirty days” What does it mean to live in the present surrounded by a turbulent (in)visible past? How do we build a democratic society after 40 years in a political freezer in just two decades? In this blog you will have a chance to take a closer look at twenty-one year old free Poland as of June/July 2010 through the eyes of nineteen young human rights activist/leaders from Poland, Ukraine, Germany and the USA. During the Humanity in Action (HIA) one-month program, HIA fellows will investigate and explore a country located in the heart of Europe, a young democracy known for its long, rich and turbulent history, bridging the West with the East, experiencing shifts from diversity to homogeneity and most recently to the reappearance of pluralism. HIA fellows will zoom into Poland’s multilayered historical and cultural heritage and contemporary situation in order to uncover the meaning of S/solidarity and resistance; human rights and civil society. They will try to identify the potential for change and look for ways leaders and community members can bring about that change. Join us on this 30-day-rollercoaster ride ;-) HIA Poland Team
