| Introduction | Aleksander Meier, Coordinator of Port Workers, ITF Baltic FOC-POC Interface Coordinator, ESIU\ITF I worked as a Stevedore in the Old Port of Tallinn from 1998 to 2007. I am from the seamen’s family. My parents were seafarers. My father used to work in Tallink on the m/v “Georg Ots” as a Bosun. Mother worked as a Cook on the ship of Estonian Shipping Company. Now they are pensioners. In 1996 I went to work in port after the university in order that to earn for my family living. At the beginning I was a Tallman about two years. Since 1997 I worked as a supervisor. In 1998 I accepted an offer to continue working in the Old Port of Tallinn as a Stevedore. In 2007 the employer, AS HTG invest (affiliated Tallink Company), decided to do this work without the Stevedores, because all Dockers and their Foremen were trained excellently. My colleague, Raul Siniallik, Trustee of the union, was the last Stevedore in the Company and then he was dismissed in November 2007. In May 2007 the union ESIU called me to work the full time. In January 2010 I was accepted by an ITF Dockers' Section to start working in the Baltic FOC-POC Campaign as a Coordinator. |
