| Introduction | Claudia was born in Peru to bookish German parents. For Claudia, much of what passes for education in the United States is nothing but basic literacy. Claudia believes in fostering the life of the mind by feeding children a rich diet of history, mythology, and great books. Kenneth Burke referred to literature as "equipment for living." Literature lets us slip surreptitiously into the lives of others, lives from which we can learn how to be courageous, thoughtful, empathic, passionate, responsible, heroic, dignified. Literature can teach us how to shape a good life, and how to endure and survive the hardships that await us. |
