IntroductionI am a Catholic priest and moral theologian. I have taught moral theology for 15 years. I keep up with developments in bioethics and natural fertility care. My educational background includes a law degree and a Pontifical degree in moral theology. A fundamental problem with the study of law and morality today is the avoidance of the truth about human nature, made in the image of the Creator who endows human beings with certain inalienable rights. The loss of this sense of human nature is directly related to the rise of pragmatic thought. The influence of pragmatism in law and morality has been catastrophic. Pragmatism is at the root of both judicial activism and the Catholic theories of morality which are known as "consequentialism" and "proportionalism."
