IntroductionCHARLZ CASTRO had the best vantage points for narrating stories about Dupax del Sur, a formerly deer-rich, forest-blessed, and dreaded headhunting town in the southern part of Nueva Vizcaya, the Philippines. Now in his sixties, he was both a “taga-ili” (lived in the central part of the town) and a “taga-away” (lived in the barrio) and, in his younger years, preferred sauntering, birding, or being with farm folk in the rivers, hills, carabao grazing lands, and ricefields than to play with his contemporaries. He is proficient in both spoken and written Isinay and Ilokano (the major languages of Dupax), and since 2008 has been compiling Isinay words en route to the making of what is envisioned to be the first comprehensive dictionary of the currently endangered Isinay language. He has been blogging for almost a decade now and was the first blogger to write about Dupax and its Isinay language. If you google the words "Dupax" and "Isinay" today, many if not most of the articles and images you would hit were his contributions to the Internet.
