| Introduction | I have been joyfully involved in the local food movement for over 15 years, and I've been writing off and on for longer than that. This blog is an opportunity for me to combine those two loves. Here's how my local food journey began: In May of 1993, I was looking for a summer job close to home. A big book of internships (remember those?) pointed me in the direction of Hartford Food System, a Connecticut non-profit that was pioneering the idea of local food access for all. I spent the summer promoting WIC Fruit & Veggie Vouchers at farmers markets across Hartford, and found the calling that would shape all my professional choices thereafter. Thanks to that summer at Hartford Food System, I spent 5 years on a bio-dynamic farm in upstate New York, directed two farm-based summer camps, got an M.S. in Environmental Education with a focus on food systems education, and have spent 6 years advocating and fund-raising for the Massachusetts farmers market system. 17 years out from that fateful summer job, I'm still working with farmers, food systems, and farmers markets, and I still love that work. These are my ruminations on the food movement as I experience it. |
