About me

Occupation Horticulture, Garden writing, Garden design, Lecturing
Location By Hadrian's Wall, north of Hexham, Northumberland, United Kingdom
Introduction I have gardened all my life and the last twenty-three years has been spent creating and managing Chesters Walled Garden next to Hadrian's Wall. This organically run garden mixes rare perennials with wildflowers in a distinctive, naturalistic style. A garden writer, member of the Garden Media Guild, I have written several books on herbs and contributed to many gardening magazines. A recent book is entitled 'Gardens of Northumberland and the Borders' and is a collaboration with the photographer, Simon Fraser, whose stunning and atmospheric photographs make the book a visual treat. My latest is 'A Sense of Herbs', a very personal collection of my favourite cooking herbs with drawings that I did whilst sitting on a bench in the walled garden. I lecture (see the RHS Speakers List) and design gardens, specialising in herb and wildflower gardens.
Interests Gardening interests & lectures given: The herb collection at Chesters Walled Garden, Wildlife gardens, Antique flowers, Organic and biodynamic gardening, A Natural Approach to gardening, Gardens of Northumberland and the Borders (based on my book).
