| Introduction | I, the editor and publisher, am a retired physician with a special interest in Alzheimer's disease. My Mom has had Alzheimer's for the past 12 years. Being a son and a hands-on caregiver, I have experienced and dealt with her progression every week, from the early stages when she needed some occasional guidance, to her current residence in a nursing home. After the first few years at her home she needed the help of home care aides. For the past 6 years she has not been able to care for herself. Her illness has slowly progressed, and she is now in the final stages. Amazingly, after so many years of being afflicted, she still has flashes of insight and humor; unfortunately, these brief episodes have become too few and far between as Mom now sleeps a lot. Because of my experiences, I created an Alzheimer's home care agency which gave me real life insights into the world of Alzheimer’s. New research and findings have given me additional insights that I wish to share with others. UPDATE - I am sorry to report that Mom passed on at age 96. Other than Alzheimer's, she had no illnesses. AD has been called "The Long Goodbye" which is illustrated in Mom's life R.I.P. MOM. |
