Introduction Skinner Vineyards is committed to producing hand-crafted, artisanal wines that reflect the unique spirit of the Sierra Foothills, using the same Rhône varietals that were grown by their family 150 years ago. Founded in 2006 by Mike and Carey Skinner, two vineyards in California’s Sierra Foothills and a new winery and tasting room at an elevation of 2,700 feet in the Fair Play AVA comprise the venture. James Skinner, the great-great-great-grandfather of current owner Mike Skinner, was one of the forefathers of the Sierra Foothills wine industry; his vineyard and winery, started in 1861, was one of the first and largest in area. The old J. Skinner Winery was a thriving business forced to close during Prohibition, but Mike and wife Carey return to carry on the family legacy. The new 12,000 square foot winery is solar-powered, made of 70% recycled steel and designed with environmental sustainability as a top priority. Production is currently limited to under 1,500 cases per year.
