| Introduction | Gary T. Guthrie (The Carrot King) Started Growing Harmony Farm in Nevada, IA in 1997 (a Community Supported Agriculture Farm). Before that he graduated in Agronomy from Iowa State University, worked in corn breeding for a few years then started work with the Mennonite Central Committee in Bolivia. Married Nancy Tielkemeier in 1986 and worked in El Salvador from 87-90 with MCC. These experiences in working with farmers in L. A. in sustainability led him back to Iowa to start GHF. I have embraced both the Catholic and Mennonite traditions, choosing a both/and (mystical) spirituality. I have a ministry in spiritual direction also. So this blog is my attempt to weave my faith and agricultural experiences with the sacredness of healthy food. Journalist Jay Wagner gave me the title "The Carrot King" in Edible Iowa River Valley when he described first biting into one of my Bolero carrots. These carrots have come to symbolize "abundant life" when one is faithful to tending the soil of our earth and the soil of our own lives. |
