Introduction | A long-time SP modeler in HO and a California native, Tony Thompson is interested in Southern Pacific and Pacific Fruit Express history, and has published both magazine articles and books on this subject. These include the PFE book, for which he was editor and principal author, a five-volume series on SP freight cars, and a book about SP’s Coast Route. In addition to articles for Railroad Model Craftsman and other model magazines, he also wrote the modeling column in the SP Historical and Technical Society’s magazine, Trainline, for 25 years. He was member of the SPH&TS board for 28 years, and served five years as the Society’s President. He has hosted more than 90 operating sessions on his present layout, and it was among the layouts operated at ProRail in April 2024, here in the Bay Area. After a career in university teaching and research as a materials scientist, he is retired from U.C. Berkeley. During their 30 years in business, he was co-owner and editor for Signature Press book publishing. |
