| Introduction | Joan was born, cleared her throat, and began talking as soon as she could. She dropped out of kindergarten after five days at Tooker Avenue Elementary School in West Babylon, but the following Monday her parents made her re-enroll, at Phelps Lane Elementary School, after moving to their new house in North Babylon. Resuming her education with the letter "B," she worked her way to "Z," learned to write, and graduated high school with only one grade of Incomplete: for Childhood. (She still gets in trouble for her dinner table behavior, and blames it on her two young nieces, but no one believes they started it first.) Joan earned her way through college by selling fish and chips; flaming lipsticks (ask, sometime ...); and cleaning toilet bowls on Fire Island (averaging 23 a week). Now she's happy to clean just one - at her little home on Long Island. She likes people, words, and ... ellipses ... usually in that order, and sees the world in stories. Magical ones ... Here are columns from Side Street: Stories from Around the Block, first published in the South Bay's Neighbor News. They come out the last Wednesday of each month. |
