| Introduction | On 3rd June 1927 a meeting was held at Narborough Road Council School at which the Leicester City Permanent Allotment Society was formed. This meeting was the beginning of what are now the Rosamund Avenue and Braunstone Close Allotment Sites. In July 1927, the Society was registered, with the affiliation fee being £3/2/6d. By September (at the cost of £5 an acre) 9 acres of land was ready for the plots to be pegged and numbered and avenues prepared to allow vehicles to access the site. In November, Potters the Ironfounders of Western Road, tipped ashes, free of charge, to build up the avenues. Mr Gamble, a neighbouring farmer, was asked to reserve his manure (make up your own jokes) and Mr Turnbull was contacted about rights of way to the site. Finally, the Leicester Mercury ran an advert to encourage newcomeres to take up vacant plots, at a rental of 4/6d per 100 yards to be paid in March and September each year |
