Introduction I am a full-time mum, wife and part time Alpaca herd manager. I love learning about new things and recently completed a BSc Hons as a mature student. On reaching the age of 40 my husband asked what I would like as a birthday present. I would like to be able say that I was bored of recieving diamonds but that would be an untruth as you know; diamonds are a girls best friend and incidentially I own very few! However, I opted for Alpacas and can say categorically that I do not regret the decision at all. They give me and my family so much pleasure they are just beautiful creatures. From small beginings of a herd of three we now stand at 30 and have decided that we are happy to stop with this figure. At the moment my husband and I are able to manage our herd between us and fit in all those other demands and we feel that if we expanded it would make mored demands on our time.
Interests Obviously one of my top interestes is looking after my herd of beautiful alpacas. They are so gentle inquisitive and calming that I just love to sit down with them in the paddock. They all come running and skipping up to me to say hello, especially if I happen to be carrying a trug or bucket which indicates food! They give me a little sniff. You can feel their warm breath on the top of your head or on your cheek. Then they just stay close and chew the grass as they all humm to one another. I have one cheeky girl, Solstice and when she wants my attention she uses her teeth to tug at my clothes. On a hot day they adore it when I hose them down. They jostle for a place next to the water and start pawing at the wet grass with their feet and eventually cush down to cool their tummies on the wet grass. Because they produce such gorgeous fleece my interested have extended to processing the fleece. I have learnt to efficiently and expertly grade and sort the fleece, handspin and am now trying to tackle knitting. As a result of my love and other peoples interests I have started to have groups visit me (Ladies Circle, spinners and weavers guilds, NFU ladies groups) to learn more and to view my alpacas. Of course they all fall in love with them.
