| Introduction | James Butler first began painting in 1974, but pursued art more seriously after retirement from salaried employment in 1993. Though largely self-taught (with a significant collection of art books and magazines) he took classes with a number of artist instructors at the Ottawa School of Art, including the well-known sculptor, Bruce Garner, and participated in workshops with popular Ottawa-area landscape painter, Bruce Heggtveit.
