Introduction Over the past decade, I have worked in multiple realms of the human service field, in both the United States and Haiti, to include adolescent group homes, children with disabilities, and families facing overwhelming circumstances of living in poverty. I have witnessed a tremendous amount of suffering in my work, and know personally the toll that being a caregiver can truly take. I believe that in order to be effective caregivers we have to actively take care of ourselves first. The only way to be a powerful treater is to maintain emotional regulation, and be present for our clients every time they need us. If you don’t take care of you, it will be impossible to take great care of your clients. To all of you who spend your days caring for someone who is suffering: I respect and appreciate you more than I can say. What you are doing is selfless, and my hope is that you may find inner peace amidst the turmoil. I hope you may find serenity in doing self care, so that you may be in the most present, compassionate space for the people in you are caring for.
