| Introduction | José Maurício Lomelino Alves (Joe Alves) immigrated from São Miguel, Azores in 1957 with his parents and brother to San Jose, California, and moved to San Diego in 1974. He is President Emeritus of the Portuguese Historical Center, Founder and Past President of the Azorean Alliance and Past President of Cabrillo Festival. He contributed to the books, The Holy Ghost Festas – A Historic Perspective of the Portuguese in California and to Capelinhos A Volcano of Synergies – Azorian Immigration to America. In 1988 he was awarded the Medal of Merit by the Portuguese Government. Professionally he is a snack food production consultant. |
