| Introduction | I am a Marine officer, aviator, Middle East specialist, and author. My first book, Iraq in Transition: The Legacy of Dictatorship and the Prospects for Democracy came out from Potomac Books in 2009 and I am currently working on my second book, which will deal with the social and economic roots of coming geopolitical challenges in the next few decades. In particular, I am interested in the rise of emerging economies, the socio-economic issues that modernization poses there, and the challenges faced by the leading democracies and their welfare state model. My articles have been published in the Marine Corps Gazette and the security studies journals Survival and Strategic Insights.
