| Introduction | Born in apartheid South Africa, I moved to the UK in 1975 to study for my English/Italian degree at Cardiff University which had the most challenging literary criticism course at the time. After working in Italy for a year, I returned to become active in the Miners Strike and politics in general. I have campaigned actively against racism and for womens' rights ever since. My work in the public sector and as an active trade unionist places me at the heart of current discussions of work today. I'm part way through a degree in journalism which is improving my critical writing on the world of work, South Africa and the arts. I was recently blown away by the Venzuelan orchestra, El Sistema, because of their mastery of the demands imposed by classical music. |
