Introduction There's not much to tell about by religious background and the abandonment thereof. I was raised by an agnostic father and a very progressive Christian mother in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, a denomination known for its liberalism. The church we attended was so liberal, in fact, that it was in danger of being kicked out of the ELCA for being too liberal. In retrospect, I'm pretty sure I became a de facto atheist when I reached the standard battery of high school science classes -- the scientific approach to understanding the world made much more sense to me, and concepts such as "God" simply became useless -- though it took me until my mid-20's to admit it. Oh, how I clung to the term "agnostic." But there came a time when I simply had to call an atheist and atheist, and I was one. Had been for years.
