| Introduction | Becoming an imperfect pastor was both natural and hard. Imperfection expertise was present at birth, and is evident in my journey becoming a pastor. In college, I aspired to become a famous physicist, even earning a degree in the process. However, after two and a half years being mastered by differential equations, I finally conceded I would never get a Ph.D., let alone become famous. Instead, I thought God called me to be a pastor and headed off to two wonderful years at seminary. I then a) got married b) ran out of money c) got a job as a computer programmer, which would d) help fund finishing seminary. But I flunked saving money. More fundamentally, I realized that to care for people, I needed to care about people. And I didn't- I believed "doing things" was the important thing, and people just happened to be the means for getting things done. I had to learn that following God was all about relationships, and being a fast learner, I’ve only taken 30+ years to start to "get" it. What comes naturally makes pastoring hard, even impossible without God. Which means I belong in an "imperfect church." I hope you'll join me in exploring our imperfect relationship with a perfect God. |
