| Introduction | Begun as a hobby project in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, ACE has morphed into an experiment in preservation. 500 years ago, there were thousands of unique varietals of apple and pear trees around the world. In recent decades, narrow commercial production and the decline of agrarian lifestyles have lead to sharply decreased biodiversity in these and other cherished fruit species. The goal of the Ancient Cultivars Experiment is partly preservation and partly dissemination. We hope to reintroduce the varietals valued so highly by our ancestors, and to use them in the production of new and traditional agricultural items, thereby ensuring future availability of such fruits in Pennsylvania and beyond. |
