| Introduction | I'm a career journalist and now work as a project manager in the Green Transport section of the Regional Environmental Center, based in Hungary. I ride a bike to work everyday, weather permitting. Door to door, it's 22 kilometres, so I do lots of biking week-in, week-out, and since starting this regimin back in 2002, I've developed some opinions on the bicycling conditions in Budapest. In 2004-2005, I did a masters course at Central European University on environmental sciences and policy. As my thesis topic, I chose "Challenges to Making Bicycling a Key Element of Budapest's Transport Sytem." Alongside my research in Budapest, I did a couple study visits to Paris, an inspiring example of a city that has built up a cycling culture from the ground up through focused investments. Since then, I've made presentations based on this research at seminars on sustainable transport and at a forum at Budapest City Hall concerning the development plans for transport cycling. |
