About me

IntroductionI've been around the markets for over 50 years. My bank manager actually lent me money to speculate with when I was a student - those were the days! I managed other people's money on Wall St. from 1971 to 1997, when I quit because they made no sense to me (the markets, not my clients). 2000-2009 = the worst U.S. stockmarket decade ever, so perhaps better now a few years too early than a few days too late. Markets have always made me humble, usually right after I thought I was the smartest guy on the block. As a dedicated contrarian, overwhelming global bearishness (23 sept '11) means that after 15 years it's time to start being a gentle buyer. It's always dangerous to say that this time things are different, because "the system" has so far invariably proven to be more flexible than one thinks - there could be an eventual athabascan/nuclear/thorium/tidal/wind/bacterial/solar-powered/fracking glimmer of (in the very long-term inflationary) hope that should help prevent energy limits strangling any ultra distant global growth. Basically, the moral of my experience is that complacency leads directly to incompetence, i.e. relax and you'll get shafted.
