| Introduction | I was supposed to be a 2020 PCT NOBO (Northbound), but had to cancel and became a 2020 NOGO, because...you know. COVID-19 was irrefutably worse for many more people than it was for me, but still, it was pretty bad timing for me. I had retired early, and sold my house all because I wanted to hike the PCT, and other long trails, while I was still physically able to do so. Important as I have had multiple interesting and unexpected medical conditions--but aren't they all. Mine have included cancer (not something I really talk about), Hypothyroidism, spinal surgery due to bulging disk, liver issues (even though I hardly drink), Chronic Sinusitis, Anemia, and lastly, Eustachian Tube Dysfunction. Oh yeah, I almost died of heat exhaustion in 2014 while on a long hike on a very hot day in a remote part of Utah (this prompted me to get much more serious about my fitness). The point being, you never know what tomorrow will bring. Thus, the early retirement and desire to get on the trail while I still could. If there were a reliable way to predict hundred year global pandemics, I, obviously, would have altered my plans. But here I am now, done looking back, just ready to go. |
