| Introduction | My father was an underground coal miner for more than 34 years; my mother was a coal camp housewife for more than 25 years, I lived almost 50 years in the East Kentucky foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and worked 15 years in the coalfields. I have a passion for teaching college students, many of whom are older and are trying to redirect their careers and personal lives. While my professional perspective is that of a social scientist,my personal passion leans more towards intellectual, social, and spiritual growth. I strive to motivate my students to grow in many ways. Life's forces converge into a prism through which we view the world & ourselves, if we so choose. My Appalachian heritage is pivotal to my self understanding, yet I have ongoing experiences that either validate or contradict my beliefs and attitudes.I'm an evolving person who faces change optimistically as I grow.Since self concept and self esteem are ideational, my life flows through the geographical, social, temporal, economic, and experiential filters surrounding me. Life is Rich. |
