IntroductionCalligraphy in the West does not seem to be considered one of the fine arts. By art historians it is generally ignored and by tourists and art connoisseurs it is usually overlooked. Nevertheless, masterpieces of European calligraphy do exist. Some are in books, hidden in libraries of ancient manuscripts. Others are cut in stone or painted on walls, for all to be seen. Often they are found in small village churches far from popular tourist trails. As it happens I am an art historian unusual in the sense that I don’t ignore calligraphy. I am also unusual in the sense that I enjoy cycling tours. As I live in southern England my tours are usually around that part of the country, as well as other countries of northern Europe. Wherever I see interesting calligraphy, I take note as well as a picture. And I put it here.
