| Introduction | I’m married and have two sons. Cody died in 2004 of an alcohol & drug overdose. His younger brother is now in college. I’m a Christian and active in the community. Reformed years before my sons were born, yet if you knew me in college you know I partied. Not something I’m proud to admit, but I learned the hard way about the damage alcohol caused in my life and those I love. My sons weren’t raised in a home of drinking and drugs, but our culture fosters the myth that underage drinking and drug use is a right of passage to adulthood. Ads and popular media reinforce this widely held idea with programs and events that portray drinking and drug use as harmless and socially accepted behavior. Unfortunately, too many of our youth are suffering the consequences of this unsound cultural influence and paying the price with shattered dreams, broken lives, devastated families and sometimes death. My son’s death forced me to examine what I believe about underage drinking and drug use, and what I could do to influence changes in policy and perception. I can’t bring my son back, but my prayer is that God imparts purpose and delivers change through our tragedy that will save other precious lives. |
