| Introduction | Stories of my Illinois ancestors were shared with me by my great grandmother (Grace Ellen Smith Scanlon) at an early age and this sparked a deep interest in genealogy. After many years of library and Internet research I decided to visit the areas where my ancestors once lived. I’ve now made several trips to Illinois, and over the course of these visits have focused my efforts on researching historic townships and documenting cemeteries. When not in Illinois I keep busy completing historical and genealogical research on the many early settlers graves that I've come across. You can view my research at http://history.montgomeryco.com/ So profoundly affected by the experiences I have had visiting and documenting many abandoned cemeteries in Illinois, I have returned to school (CSUN) to pursue a graduate degree in anthropology. My plan is to focus my thesis on abandoned or historic cemeteries. Cemeteries reflect the past and present regional ethnic identities and social/cultural values a community. |
