Introduction | The Contessa’s mother, the daughter of an aristocratic British family, had run away with an Italian Count after they had met at a tea. Their families had not approved. They fled Europe, leaving their families behind, and landed in North America. They married immediately and within months were joyfully expecting the arrival of a child. The young Contessa displayed qualities in keeping with her fine pedigree. Even as a toddler, she used grammatically correct phrases and a vocabulary much more broad and expansive than her few years. She was the darling of the Count's family--travelling to Italy every year to enjoy the mild Mediterranean winter with her Aunt who lived in a palazzo in Venice. As she matured, she became the toast of the International Set, bringing her wit, fashion and style to every party she attended. Hostesses from London, Paris and New York competed to lure the Contessa to their parties. Stars, diplomats and royals invariably asked, "Will the Contessa be there?" A party just wasn't worth attending if the Contessa was absent. |
