Introduction I arrived on Maui...Honokowai...1986 to open a restaurant for Kapalua Bay Hotel and Villas with my best friend from Culinary School, Juan from Guam. I came to stamps purely by accident. I was making jewelry & a line of organic herb wine vinegars. I went to Miami's place to pick her up for a Keokea hike, only to find her kitchen table strewn with rubber. Love at first sight. Next thing I knew, I was drawing, cutting rubber, sanding wood, and swathing rubber cement. I hadn't a clue...it took over 5 yrs before I "got" what we were doing. All I knew is that folks of all ages, genders, and backgrounds would swarm our spot at the Kahului Flea Market. Grass Beach mats on the ground under a tree. Rubber dies slapped on chips of lathing that we barely sanded. We didn't even index our wood! Soon I was drawing whatever folks were asking us for...Local Hawaiian/Polynesian images. I still have a slew of those originals, and am tickled when, more often than I can believe, someone proudly states..."I remember when I bought my first stamp from you under that tree & I still have it!" And so it goes...palms waving aloha, Debz
