Introduction John Foss (Johnny Fishmonger) owns EelGrassRoots Media, a Marketing/PR/Film outfit(King Salmon, Alaska) with retail and restaurant clients that strive to build sustainability in operations. He is Chef & Captain of the Coastal Rovers, a band of Fishers, Chefs, and Scientists and a leader in Sustainable Local Food movements. A commercial fisher and sailor from a small Scandinavian fishing village near Seattle, he has spent 34 years in Alaska, Bristol Bay and the Bering Sea developing community-based sustainable marketing in coastal fishing communities. Working with his mentor, the Seafood Marketing Guru Jon Rowley, John was instrumental in creating the first sustainable coastal community of Cordova, Alaska. Cordova’s fortunes and environment have been saved by the renewed economic importance of Copper River Salmon to the community. Throughout the West Coast he has helped develop several artisan-based food economies, all in the belief that developing community-based, artisanal, local, and sustainable food economies reward us all as we reward rural families. Ultimately, rural and coastal families that are supported by livable economies become the best stewards of the environment.
Interests Drawing on his feature film background, (Twin Peaks, Sleepless in Seattle, Singles, You Can't Win), where "nothing is impossible", John used helicopters, Bush pilots, jets, and new media to assist in blowing up the Copper River Salmon marketing phenomenon.
