IntroductionI began my volunteer service with the Louisville KY Chapter of the Red Cross in 2005, on the heels of hurricane Katrina. I was immediately hooked. The joy of serving others in need became contagious real quick. Once I completed my deployment in New Orleans, I immediately signed up for the DAT Team, quickly soaring to a supervisory/training role to help others find the same passion I had found. I was a "junkie", traveling from one side of the country to another helping in everything from floods to tornados, hurricanes to wildfires. In 2012, I moved to Dallas TX. Much to my dismay, serving this community is an expensive venture. You have to pay tolls to get around the city so a week on call could cost me $200 in tolls. Unfortunately, there is no reimbursement so that left me out of the DAT program I loved so much. Since my experience with Red Cross in New Orleans 9th Ward, I have a special place in my heart for the city and for those who still strive to rebuild their lives. I have been back several times and consider it my "second home". I hope to move back home to Louisville in the near future and become active in the Chapter I love so much.
