| Introduction | On September 4, 2009, I married my partner of nine years, in the rose garden of a park down the street from where I grew up, in Davenport, Iowa. Although we had shared our lives for over nine years at that point, when we married we also began sharing a last name. Apparently the idea of a man with a hyphenated last name is much more confusing than we could have ever anticipated. Reactions vary from simple confusion, to questions, to knowing and/or disapproving looks as the card with a hyphenated last name is handed back to us. |
