| Introduction | I'm a native of Washington DC, the product of excellent Catholic schools including Georgetown Visitation Prep, and Georgetown University, class of 1968, whose most famous classmate is Bill Clinton. In the 1980s I was an exhibition supervisor at the National Gallery of Art, working on shows such as Treasure Houses of Britain and Japan, the Age of the Daimyo. My first day on the job the charming Prince and exquisite Princess of Wales walked up to me and began a conversation. I thought, Wow! I am REALLY gonna like this job!" And I did. In 1992 I worked as a volunteer on the campaign of my lifelong friend, Governor Bill Clinton, and never once thought there'd be a job in it for me. Not once. But, in January, 1993, I was called to the White House as Director of the Visitors Office. I held this job for all eight years of the administration, and am the first person in history to do that. In 2005 a chance viewing of a television program showed me a bunch of happy Americans living on the ocean in Baja, Mexico, just 45 minutes south of downtown San Diego. The rest is a story I'll tell in the blog. I hope you'll find it interesting. |
