Sponges and tongues are frequently misspelled. Is it because both are thirsty?

No. It's because of the "ung" sound. Sponges is pronounced, as we all know, "Spun-gass," so most people just spell it as spungs (or spungz). Tongues, on the other hand, is pronounced "tun-goos," and so most people simply spell it "tungus." Really, though, language is more about communication than proper spelling. As long as the point gets across, I think any of the spellings should be fine.
