Introduction | Shammai Engelmayer is rabbi of Temple Israel Community Center in Cliffside Park, NJ. He is a former president of the North Jersey Board of Rabbis. The product of the yeshivah world, he was ordained in 1967, but opted for a journalism career. A former executive editor of the New York Jewish Week, he authors a bi-weekly column in The Jewish Standard. Before the JWeek, he was editor of North American Newspaper Alliance, a news service of United Feature Syndicate. He earned several journalism awards, including the National Association for Justice’s Media Humanitarian Award in 1974 and the Washington Journalism Center’s 1975 Thomas L. Stokes Award for National Reporting. Other awards include: Excellence in Single Commentary/2nd Place, AJPA, 2013; Editorial Writing/1st place, AJPA, 2012; Opinion Column Writing, American Jewish Press Association, 2005; Opinion Column Writing, AJPA, 2004; Editorial Writing/1st place, AJPA, 1990; Editorial Writing/2nd place, AJPA, 1989; Editorial Writing/1st place, AJPA, 1988. He is the author of eight books, and is at work on three more. He has three children, 10 grandchildren, and 2 dogs. |
