| Introduction | Cultural status: white, male, hetero, adopted, 40-something, skilled laborer, longhair, New Englander, son, husband, & father. Spiritual status: largely adrift yet seeking coherence, a typical Pisces swimming in two directions at once, continually vacillating between my life at the margins and my desire for cultural acceptance, a self-avowed ne'er-do-well. Professional status: over-educated and underemployed -- trained academic, working chef, non-working musician, lousy business person. Triad status: I'm a "baby scoop" era adoptee, born and relinquished in 1964, began search in 1990 and reunited in 1997. Although I did not legally adopt them, I have helped parent from birth the three sons of my closest friend (another proud bastard), whom I consider sons and who call me 'dad.' I am also a new father of a boy me an' the missus got 'the ol' fashioned way,' without lawyers or agencies, by gum. |
