Introductionis Jeddah bureau chief of the Saudi Gazette, an English-language newspaper in Saudi Arabia, is one of the leading women journalists in the Kingdom. Known for her aggressive, groundbreaking reporting on issues involving terrorism, women’s rights and reform in Saudi Arabia, Ms. Jawhar is among the few Saudi women covering the hard news beat that until recently has been open only to men. Her beats include the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Interior. Born in the holy city of Madinah, she earned a bachelor’s of arts degree in English language and literature at the King Abdul Aziz University and a master’s degree in applied linguistics at Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah. After working as a high school English language teacher, she switched careers to the competitive field of journalism, rising through the ranks at the Saudi Gazette from reporter to bureau chief. In the summer of 2005, she earned a Fellowship at the prestigious Korean Press Foundation and Yonsei Communication Research Institute in Seoul, South Korea.
